Beat the Winter Blues

When I create my blog content, I always want to do something that feels on brand and for me this fit because I’m always trying to find new ways to find enjoyment out of life but also to support local businesses.
So for this post, I’m not going to post necessarily a thing to ”buy” like the best robot vacuum on Amazon but instead going to post an activity to do this winter. For some, It’s a very isolating time and hard to get the motivation to leave the house because it feels like the days are so dark and dreary.
So check out my little list of things to do with your friends, family members or your partner that will bring a little light to your life.

Check out SoHum! It’s a new store that has opened up more recently in the Walkerville area and from what I’ve heard from others is that it’s so much fun! They have options for not only pouring your own custom-scented candles but also making your own hand-soap, reed diffusers, body wash, and room spray.
This would be a great activity to get out of the house and create some beautifully scented products for your home that are reminiscent of the lovely experience you’ve had.

One of the coolest little spots in Windsor is Sketch Clay and Pottery! Danielle the owner and her staff are such a joy to learn from, my husband and I went one evening to experience their pottery wheels and had a total blast. One of my favourite parts of our experience was just having the creative freedom to create whatever we wanted AND we got some quirky little pieces to use at home at the end of our experience (after the pieces were glazed and fired of course). They also offer things like clay hand-building, painting pottery pieces and take-home paint your own pottery kits. I highly recommend this experience because you can literally go with anyone and you will both be smiling ear-to-ear at the end of the class.

Pampering yourself is a huge part of my self-care routine and what better way to treat yo’self than to book a side-by-side pedicure with a friend or family member at Jem Glamorganic Spa. By far, this is the best pedicure I’ve had in my life and I’m not the only one raving about it! Jem has two locations, one in Tecumseh and one in Harrow and offers so much more than pedicures as well. Their facials are fantastic and I’ve also really enjoyed their reiki treatments as well. Check them out if you’re in need of some self-love.

Some experiences can spark life-long hobbies and this one is taught by one of the best in the industry; check out Dianne at the Hook Pusher! Although not offered daily, I’ve heard through the grapevine that Dianne offers classes on how to crochet and will teach you all techniques to create your own one-of-a-kind pieces. Crocheting is something I’ve always wanted to learn but never had someone teach me, so this has me thinking of signing up with one of my girlfriends so we can go and learn something new together! At the Hook Pusher, Dianne also offers yarn and crochet patterns for sale so if this becomes a serious new obsession of yours, you can buy your supplies and support a small business all in one!

If you’re not into hands on activities that’s okay too! There are lots of shows and musicals that you can take in at the Windsor Light Music Theatre or at the Windsor Symphony. Check out their ever-changing calendar of shows and musical performances because it’s a great excuse to dress up, grab dinner out, and check out a show. There are a few shows coming up that you won’t want to miss such as; Charlie and The Chocolate Factory coming early spring. So plan a date night out with your significant other and enjoy the show!

Looking to express and let your creativity shine? Check out The Art Lab located on historic Ottawa Street in Windsor. The art lab not only offers workshops for kids but also for adults! This is a great way to get out of the house and create some art that you can proudly display in your own home. The Art Lab also offers a neat “splatter room” , tie-dye workshops, slime making, subscription boxes and so much more. If you want to do something as a family and get a little messy this is the perfect spot to do so!

There is so much more to experience in our community this winter and if none of these are within your budget, I totally understand! Grab a cup of coffee from a local shop like Anchor Coffee House or Twenty Two Coffee House and go for a walk in a new neighbourhood. You could also stop in the Art Gallery of Windsor to check out an exhibit - there are so many good ones! Lastly if you feel like you need some quiet time you could drop into a yoga class at Chill Massage Therapy & Hot yoga and get some stretching and relaxation in. Whatever you decide to do this winter, support local when you can and enjoy yourself - you deserve it!

Cheers friends,

Markie.
